I am an Environmental science graduate with a masters in bioinformatics. I love cooking. Yesterday I was baking cinnamon rolls and had a thought what if yeast could be engineered to have radically new flavors (already a wide variety of things can be achieved by fermenting food with natural yeasts but would it be possible to make richer flavours of bread or cheese or wine if the yeast was engineered?)
I maybe think the course has started the analogy f a cell to a on off silico switch which I have found inspiring but I am unsure how to get an idea that follows this engineering logic.
In other, i like plants and medicinal uses and conservation of biodiversity, soil and human microbiomes, and I am interested in water recycling plants and biomanufacturing with that waste.
I think there are ethical concerns with releasing these into the wild, in that they can have lateral gene transfers and gain of funtions that can perturb environmental systems. I dont think my projects could have dual use at face value but the technologies that get used in their production might?
I am interested in directed evolution as a method, I think it could be interesting to apply it to explore constraints
I also like flow cytometry and single cell systems.
